    LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Academic Position: Librarian Closing Date: July 23, 2004 DESCRIPTION OF POSITION Los Angeles Harbor College is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented librarian. This is a probationary, tenure track, library faculty position with primary responsibility for electronic resources, periodicals, and library instruction in the college’s library. This is a “C” basis fulltime assignment that extends from the beginning of the Fall Semester to the end of the Spring Semester. Requirements District Minimum Qualifications: Master’s in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school OR a valid community college credential to teach in the discipline OR the equivalent. Applicants not meeting the minimum requirements who think they have satisfied the equivalence thereto may file an application for equivalence to those requirements under Board Rule 10305. Desirable Qualifications Broad general educational background with liberal arts emphasis. Knowledge of and current experience in the use of a variety of online subscription databases. Familiarity with information literacy issues relative to student needs. Demonstrated experience in providing reference service and bibliographic instruction in an academic environment, including teaching information literacy skills. Commitment to professional growth and development, to innovation, and to assuming faculty responsibilities in a shared governance environment. Sensitivity to and understanding of the special populations the college serves. Ability to work cooperatively with other members of the library staff and faculty. Ability to utilize established word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Responsibilities Evaluate, select, and order online subscription databases and periodicals in terms of quality, need, and budgetary limitations. Maintain liaison with vendors and oversee payment of invoices. Supervise classified staff and students in periodicals department. Evaluate the periodicals collection, designating issues to be maintained or discarded. Provide reference services as scheduled. Design and coordinate the production and access of various library guides, handouts, web pages, and instructional resource materials. Coordinate the scheduling of library workshops and faculty liaison for the library instruction program. Participate in teaching library instruction workshops and classes; occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required. Participate in library curriculum development, normal professional activities, and serve on college governance committees. The assignment may include the performance of other related library duties as assigned. Candidates should prepare an oral presentation of 5 - 10 minutes that demonstrates their ability to plan and teach a workshop. Situation: English 101 students will write a research paper on a topic of current interest. (Each student has a different topic, approved by the instructor). They have come to the library for a one-hour workshop on research strategies. Please outline your presentation and present an oral synopsis of your lesson content. Please provide the outline in hard copy for the interview panel (maximum 2 pages; please supply 8 copies). A whiteboard with markers will be available if desired.
