Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Chief of Cataloging, assumes primary responsibility for bibliographic database quality control (including cataloging, classification, authority control, and item creation and maintenance); accurate conversion of data into appropriate machine readable forms (including MARC, XML or other formats as required); and retrospective conversion projects. Serves as assistant supervisor of the day-to-day cataloging and processing operations of the Library.

1. Broad based experience in library cataloging, including working with a variety of material types and MARC formats.
2. Demonstrated ability to analyze and streamline work processes.
3. Ability to act as team leader and to work as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and to be responsible to stakeholder needs.
4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all library staff in order to improve library service delivery to the public.
5. Thorough knowledge of automated processes relevant to supervising and enhancing library cataloging and processing activities.
6. Drive, creativity, and flexibility.
7. Initiative in generating new ideas.
8. A proven ability to work well under pressure.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A bachelors degree from a recognized college or university and a masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.
2. Four years of professional experience in original and copy cataloging with at least one year of professional experience maintaining MARC authority control records.
3. Proven ability to organize, supervise and direct the work of others. Experience in large cataloging and processing operations desirable.
4. Demonstrated experience and superior knowledge and skill in current LC classification practices, descriptive and subject cataloging in all MARC 21 formats.
5. Working knowledge of current and emerging library catalogs, online and print cataloging resources and bibliographic tools.
6. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages and the ability to deal with unfamiliar foreign languages.
7. Relevant knowledge and/or specialized training in Dublin Core, CORC, and Metadata standards such as MODS, EAD, CDWA and GILS, etc.
8. Demonstrated ability to learn and successfully implement online systems.
9. Demonstrated superior use of a PC at the level necessary to successfully complete the tasks of the job.
10. Demonstrated working knowledge and recent hands-on experience cataloging on OCLC.
11. Proven ability to assume responsibility.
12. Proven ability to carry out assignments independently and cooperatively in a group.
13. Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines following the Librarys established system of processing priorities.
14. Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.
15. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
16. Superior work habits including: flexibility, creativity, positive customer service skills, attention to detail, accuracy, initiative, good judgment, dependability, courtesy and tact.
Requirements:
Must be a Resident of the City of Boston upon First Day of Hire.
